Projects
Our Shed has been involved in many projects over the last few years. Most of them are requested by people or organizations in the community.
Math Racks
Redesign and construct math racks for students.
These “math racks” are used for teaching grade 1 & 2 students. Current off-the-shelf products are expensive; so the Shed was asked to come up with a similar less expensive product. The math racks we produced were very well received.
Conference Table
Designed and constructed a 14ft long conference table
This 14 foot long table was designed and constructed in two 7 foot sections that bolted together. It was a fairly technical build requiring many levels of skill. The walnut trimmed table is now a permanent fixture in the boardroom of the Community Foundation of South Okanagan.
Dog Beds
Repurposed used wine barrels into dog beds
A local winery approached the Penticton Men’s Shed with a great idea: to re-purpose 20 used wine barrels into unique and sturdy pet beds, with all proceeds from the sales donated to Critteraid. We were immediately on board. This substantial project demanded many hours of dedicated work and a wide range of skills, from cutting and sanding to assembly and finishing. The result is a set of handsome, durable pet beds that give new life to the barrels while supporting a very worthy cause. Critteraid does outstanding work rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming dogs, cats, and other animals across the South Okanagan, offering compassionate care and a second chance to animals in need. We are proud of the craftsmanship and effort our members put into this initiative and deeply honoured to support such an important local organization.
Wind Phone
Design, construct & install a wind phone
A Wind Phone is an unconnected telephone booth in a natural setting, inspired by Itaru Sasaki in Japan, where people can speak to deceased loved ones to process grief. The South Okanagan Loss Society partnered with our Shed and the RDOS to bring this vision to life. We constructed a sturdy wooden Wind Phone booth, creating a serene space for reflection and healing. We were honoured to contribute to this meaningful project.
Modular Panels for Frost Fest
Constructed sturdy panels for Frost Fest Winter Carnival
The City of Penticton needed 21 panels made to be later assembled into their Frost Fest
ski/snowboard ramp. We took on the challenge. We had fun!
Christmas Pieces
Designed and crafted Christmas ornaments for PDSCL
We constructed several basic wooden Christmas pieces for the Penticton and District Society for Community Living to decorate and sell in their Christmas fund raiser. Can’t say enough nice things about these folks!
Marimbas
Construction of 7 Marimbas
Marimbas are a type of musical instrument originally developed in western Africa. They use wooden ‘keys’ which are tuned to specific notes similar to a xylophone. We designed and constructed 7 marimbas for use by the music teacher at KVR Middle School. She was using these to teach up to 5 classes per day during the school year.
The next phase of this project is to construct the long tube resonators that amplify and enhance the sound. (presently underway)
Agur Lake Benches
Design and construct benches for Agur Lake Camp
Agur Lake Camp is a serene wheelchair-accessible, barrier-free campground where people of all ages and abilities can enjoy nature with family, friends, and caregivers. They approached our Shed hoping we could build a couple of benches for their fishing dock. Our members rallied together, and delivered eight sturdy benches. As our Shed’s first project, this collaboration was a very rewarding experience
Recovery House
Supply and install reception area counter-tops
The Ask Wellness Society, which supports recovery and wellness in Penticton, reached out to our Shed to enhance their new Healing House Snp̓aʔx̌tantn facility. They sought a welcoming touch for their reception area, and we embraced the vision by crafting two live-edge counter-tops from local wood. Working with them was a rewarding experience, and we’re proud to have contributed.
