Starting a Men’s Shed
Men’s Sheds help address pressing issues of social isolation, loneliness and depression in men.
Research supports the effectiveness of Men’s Sheds in improving men’s mental health. With 3,300+ Sheds, Men’s Sheds may be the largest volunteer-driven movement dedicated to Men’s Health in the world.
Together, a group of men can accomplish anything. There are lots of resources available for men wishing to start a Men’s Shed in BC.
Tips for Starting a New Shed

- Collect contact information and start meeting weekly – it doesn’t matter where at first.
- Seek community allies to support your Shed such as your MLA, mayor and local council, MP, health authority, service clubs, community organizations, individuals.
- Find a meeting space at little or no cost.
- Start developing your shed modestly and remember the sky is the limit.
- Choose a focus: teaching each other, learning, or whatever the group is interested in.
- Don’t wait for a leader. Everyone can use their strengths to contribute and natural leaders will emerge as needed.
