The idea of a Lumby Men’s Shed (LMS) began in early 2024 with the encouragement of some wives who saw a definite need. In March of that year there was community meeting where a member of the Coquitlam Men’s Shed detailed the purpose and benefits of Men’s Sheds and outlined the process required to set up our own Shed. The first official meeting of the LMS was April 5, 2024 and continued for some months, taking place in a local Lumby coffee shop, Jitter Beans, which provided us with a space while we planned, grew support and looked for a suitable location. It was decided by the membership that the initial focus of the LMS would be built around woodworking, something that most enjoyed but also thought to be a possible source of revenue for the future. Members would also like to develop a small metalwork shop.
Finding a suitable location was a challenge but in late 2024 the Village of Lumby offered us an empty church that we could expect to use for some years. In early 2025 the LMS moved into the empty building, cleaned and painted and began installing donated tools. Since then there has been great support from individuals, organizations and various levels of government who all support the vision of Men’s Sheds.
Our profile and value has grown in the community by holding community engagement sessions at our location with a focus on men’s health but advertised and marketed to encourage all community members to attend. This has been successful, with presenters and participants all agreeing that there were definite benefits for all.
Members take part in various community events to build awareness.
