Conversion of used donated wine barrels to dog beds
Wine Barrels to Pet Beds
Early in 2025 the Penticton Men’s Shed was asked about converting 20 wine barrels into pet beds. These beds were to be sold with all the proceeds being donated to a local animal welfare group, Critteraide
A member of that shed took on the project with not much idea what was to be involved. After picking up a couple of barrels they got the help of of someone who had experience in dismantling barrels for vatious projects. There was a well attended meeting in the workshop where we became well educated.
A committee meeting followed…
Soon a warehouse space became available for a short time which allowed us to store and work on preparing the barrels ready for cutting . 20 barrels later we had finished almost half of those into beds. Members were able to take a barrel or two home to work on in their own time. This was a bit restrictive as most members do not have their own workshops.
By December 19 barrels were cut into various shaped designs and delivered to the winery for sale to the public. Members of the Peach City Men’s Shed were greatly involved in this project.
Design and construction of a 14 foot conference table
Conference Table
The Community Foundation of the South Okanagan asked if a high quality conference table could be made to fit their office.
The CFSO is a charitable organisation with an office in Penticton. More information at Community Foundation of the South Okanagan
The main boardroom is made available to local charitable non-profits and there became a need for a resilient table to accommodate 18 plus people with in-table access to power and internet.
The Men’s Shed members who took this on went far beyond a simple table and finished with eye-catching edging and veneer surface.
Stair Handrail
A man discharged from hospital following heart surgery was sent home to his basement apartment. Because of the steps to his home he was unable to leave his residence until Dan, from the Peach City Men’s Shed , installed a handrail for him.
There are many patients who are in need of ramps, rails or others modifications in order to be safe at home following surgery. This is where the Men’s Shed can help out.
This not only improves the lives of those in need but also allows patients to be sent home and opens up hospital beds.
